The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. Ephraim George Squier (1821-1888) and Dr. Edwin Hamilton Davis (1811-1888) of Chillicothe, Ohio were antiquarian authors who became authorities in the field of Indian antiquities.
